One of the more counterintuitive arguments in understanding morality is that the people most committed to being good — the empathetic, honest, conflict-averse individuals who would never knowingly hurt anyone — are often the ones whose fear of moral impurity causes the most long-term damage, not through bad actions but through chronic inaction, because the same internal pressure that keeps them decent also keeps them risk-averse, small-scale, and permanently disqualified from the kind of messy, imperfect leadership that actually changes systems. The framework that emerges from taking this seriously draws a clean line between absolute moral principles that hold regardless of culture — don't act with targeted bad intent toward others, don't destroy what could be shared — and the far larger category of relative moral norms that establishments have historically deployed as control mechanisms, arguing that freedom is not in tension with ethics but is in fact its prerequisite, since genuine moral choice is only possible when the person making it is actually free to choose otherwise.
